Home reno an early Mother’s Day gift

30 April 2018

Mothers’ Day came early for one OzChild carer when electricians from Laser Electrical Carrum Downs organised a working bee.

Owner of Laser Electrical Carrum Downs, David Gibson was so impressed when he met Nicole MacKay that he wanted to acknowledge her for her commitment to helping children and ensuring they have access to a safe and caring environment.

Nicole and her husband Ross are extremely passionate about keeping families together and are pleased they are able to do this with their current foster children being siblings aged from 7 to 13 years. Ross’ two children also live with them.

In addition to installing new lighting, ceiling fans and power points, the Laser Electrical team added a new switch board as well as connecting power to a bungalow located in the back yard where Ross’s 19-year-old son lives.

David also teamed up with Laser Electrical Mount Evelyn to install solar panels on the couple’s roof.

For David, the project was simply about giving back to the local community.

“Everybody is busy but, as part of the local community our goal was give back to a family who has been going above and beyond, and to help them continue to do so,” David said.

David was also overwhelmed by the support he has received from other businesses wanting to help Nicole and Ross.

“The support from our suppliers, contractors and fellow Laser Members enabled this day to occur. The solar panels, lighting and switchboard were all donated by businesses we deal with and the people working on the project have all donated their time.”

OzChild Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Griffiths expressed her appreciation of the assistance provided by David and his team.

“It’s a wonderful commitment by David and his amazing team to want to undertake the work that will have Nicole and Ross’ home looking like new,” Lisa said.

“The couple have been with us for 30 years and like many of our foster carers, are doing it tough and can’t always keep up with things like the maintenance of the garden and painting, especially when there are seven children in the house.”

But for David, the reason for supporting OzChild is simple.

“It takes a village to bring up a child,” David said.

“We are just pleased to be a part of this village by helping out Nicole and Ross in a small way that will make their lives easier and help them continue to make a difference in the lives of our children.”

OzChild is looking forward to working with David and his wonderful team at Laser Electric on future projects.
