National Children’s Week 2023

This year, National Children’s Week runs from 21 to 29 October.

This week is a national celebration of Australian children and young people’s rights, talents and citizenship. The week also coincides with Universal Children’s Day. Each year, the theme of national children’s week highlights and promotes a particular Children’s Right.

The Children’s Week National theme for 2023 is based on the UNCRC Article 31: All Children have the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the art.

This week is close to the heart of the OzChild community; to celebrate the children and young people we support, care for and engage with. This week we will be highlighting how the theme of play and active engagement creates positive change in children and young people participating in OzChild programs.

For many children and young people, growing up in foster care and out-of-home settings can lead to a loss of engagement with regular activities due to changes in schedule and environment. Play and relaxation time is a vital part of a healthy, balanced life. By teaching children and young people how to find things they enjoy, get involved and take breaks when they need, we can instil how to make healthy boundaries in their social and personal lives.

This week we encourage you to talk with the children and young people in your lives about things they enjoy, hobbies they may want to start or even find an activity to do together. By getting involved, and taking an interest in what they enjoy, you end up learning a lot more about them and build stronger relationships.

To all the children and young people in the OzChild community, we see your strength and resiliency in life. We have a tremendous amount of love and respect for you all; it is a great honour for our team to deliver supports that make a difference in you and your families lives.
