15 May marks the International Day f Families, a moment for the world to recognise the vital role families play in shaping our societies. The theme for 2026 is “Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing” – highlighting that strong families are the foundation of strong communities.

The aim of Families Week is to celebrate the vital role families play in Australian society and reflect on their importance in teaching, supporting and nurturing children as they grow.

When most people think of foster care, they often picture younger children. But teenagers make up a large and often overlooked group in the foster care system. Across Australia, many young people aged 13 to 17 need safe, supportive homes and positive adult role models.

Financing for foster care is a vital part of the support system for carers across Australia. Foster carers receive regular, tax-free allowances to help cover the costs of raising a child – from groceries to school supplies, clothing, transport, and more.

The Raising Queensland report, and the recent Commission of Inquiry into the child protection system, point to the same conclusion: when families are supported earlier, and systems work together, fewer children reach crisis in the first place.
