Pushing Limits For A Worthy Cause

Move It! for OzChild inspires people to challenge themselves for many different reasons, but for one particular runner, Sam Foote, who also works for OzChild, participating in Move It! for OzChild has become a cherished annual tradition—a chance to combine fitness with purpose. This year’s challenge, however, was different. It was bigger and more challenging than he had done before, and a personal milestone. This year his goal was to complete the gruelling 2 Bays Mornington Peninsula trail.

“I’ve taken part in the Move It challenge for a couple of years now with my son, Pippin, and we’ve really enjoyed it,” Sam shares. “It’s a great way to motivate yourself, raise awareness for the great work OzChild does, and have some fun.” With a love for trail running already sparked by completing the 2 Bays Trail Run in January 2024, the decision was clear. “28 kilometres is about the maximum distance my legs can handle,” Sam admits.

“The course is unforgiving with its hills, starting with a four-kilometre climb over Red Hill from Dromana Beach. But the camaraderie, friendly chatter, and mutual support among runners make it special.”

When we asked Sam what kept the determination burning when the trail seemed endless, he stated “Even if someone had donated just $2, I wasn’t going to let them down. I use promises to drive myself, both in and outside of work.” The original fundraising goal was set at $500—a target reached despite a strained calf muscle in December that put his participation in doubt. “I stopped pushing for donations when I wasn’t sure I’d even make it to the start line. Next year, I’ll double my goal!”

Every athlete needs a good coach, and in this case, support came from a spirited six-year-old. “My daughter, Wren, is my personal trainer, she makes sure I do my stretches before morning runs—including her own invented stretches with mysterious benefits that I still follow religiously.”

Having overcome all of the challenges thrown at him during training – race day delivered its own set of trials. High humidity led to tough running conditions and chafing that mercifully distracted Sam from his strained calf and cramps. “The last three kilometres felt like twenty,” Sam recalls. “Crossing the finish line after three hours and thirty minutes, just before the race was called off due to storms, was unforgettable. And the Zooper Dooper at the end? The best thing I’ve ever tasted.”

Beyond the physical triumph, Sam’s participation in Move It! created opportunities to spotlight OzChild’s mission. “I’m the guy at BBQs who talks about how great my job is and how proud I am of the work we do at OzChild. This challenge gave me even more chances to share our story.”

We are so inspired by Sam’s efforts and proud to have him as part of the OzChild team. When we asked him to summarise his Move It! for OzChild experience, he shared this valuable message:

“You can’t take life or your health for granted. Get moving in whatever way suits you, and if you’re already active, why not join and raise funds for a fantastic cause? Most importantly, just always have fun!”
