An Apology to Care Leavers
OzChild’s history dates back to 1851, beginning with some of the first organisations established in Melbourne to care for vulnerable members of society, including the Dorcas Society and the St James’ Orphan Asylum and Visiting Society. Since this time, numerous institutions have become part of OzChild’s story.
While the purpose of each of these institutions was to provide asylum and safety for children and families and act in their best interests, sadly, we acknowledge this was not the experience for all residents.
We acknowledge with deep shame and regret the children and young people who suffered abuse and maltreatment while in our care, resulting in ongoing pain and trauma. To these residents, we failed you. We are sorry.
We make this apology as part of our commitment to ensuring these inexcusable parts of our history are not repeated. We are transparent about our past and recognise our responsibility to rectify wrongdoings. As such OzChild is participating in the National Redress Scheme, which offers essential support including counselling, financial compensation, and personal apologies. OzChild is dedicated to ensuring that survivors receive the assistance they deserve, and we commit to supporting them as best we can, respecting their unique paths to healing.Â
If you experienced abuse while living in any of the following institutions, please refer to information about our participation in the National Redress Scheme to seek support. Â
