Marking 170 years!

In 2021, OzChild proudly marked its 170th anniversary—a remarkable milestone in the organisation’s long history.

“It’s not often we get the chance to be part of an organisation that is 170 years old, and I thank every single person who has made OzChild the wonderful organisation it is today,” reflects Lisa, highlighting the significance of this achievement.

Marking such a milestone year came with its challenges. In Victoria, our staff, carers, and the children, young people, and families we supported endured 262 days in lockdown. Other states experienced less prolonged lockdowns, but the toll was equally taxing. “The plans we had to celebrate were short-lived as restrictions changed frequently and without much warning,” Lisa recalls.

Despite these challenges, we managed to gather some members of the Victorian OzChild family in May 2021 for a special event at Government House. “Thankfully, staff, carers, volunteers, and many partners and supporters were able to join us. I remember standing to the side of the room that night, looking across at the many faces and being filled with pride to be surrounded by so many people who have shared a small part of our journey,” Lisa says.

Throughout the past 170 years, OzChild’s programs and services have evolved, but we have never lost sight of our vision that all children and young people are safe, respected, nurtured, and reach their full potential.

Since 1851 we have focused on creating brighter futures for children and young people, with many remarkable individuals contributing to our success.

Sadly, the vulnerabilities facing children, young people, and families back in 1851 are not dissimilar to those being faced today. Poverty, inequity, and disadvantage still faced by so many.

“Children are being removed from their parents at alarming rates. More than 45,000 children and young people in Australia are currently placed in an out-of-home care arrangement, growing up away from family,” Lisa notes.

OzChild remains dedicated to delivering evidence-based programs and services that address these challenges effectively. “Innovation and changing the system is in our DNA, our strategic plan to 2026 will see us continue the legacy of those who have walked before us, transforming the sector to achieve better outcomes for children, young people, and their family members,” says Lisa.

In keeping with the legacy of our founding fathers, OzChild is committed to advancing evidence-based practices, advocating for systemic changes, and expanding our services where they are needed most. We will continue to honour our past while forging a future where every child and young person has the opportunity to thrive.
