An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Dandenong team as a Skills Coach, working with an exceptionally motivated team of professionals implementing Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCA), a highly acclaimed, evidence-based intervention.

Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCA) is an evidence-based treatment program that supports and treats children with significant behavioural challenges. TFCA provides a high level of support and intervention to children and young people in a more natural setting – the home of an approved foster carer.

The TFCA model contains several components including training and support for foster carers, family therapy for the child/young person’s parent or aftercare placement, skills training for the child or young person, education support, case management and consultation.

An individualised treatment plan is developed for each child or young person in the program, with goals focused on improving emotional and behavioural functioning, promoting positive educational outcomes, and building strong family relationships.

A child’s goals are met through close supervision, fair and consistent limits, predictable consequences, and supportive relationships with mentoring adults.

The purpose of the position is to support the TFCA treatment model by providing weekly coaching to a child or young person, focusing on the goals set out in their plan. The Skills Coach positively influences the child or young person to improve their skills and behaviour.

Your role

• Work with children and young people aged 7–11 or 12–17 years with behavioural challenges, providing a consistent and reinforcing environment where pro-social skills are learned and practised
• Work closely with a positive, solution-oriented and supportive team
• Work with highly trained professional foster carers
• Solve problems using creativity and a sense of humour
• Ensure the behavioural model is delivered with fidelity
• Transform the lives of children and families

Skills & Experience required

• Ability to observe a child/young person’s behaviour and implement a behaviour management plan; knowledge and familiarity of behaviour management principles and ways of facilitating behaviour change is preferred
• Demonstrated understanding of developmentally appropriate behaviour for children/adolescents across home, school and community settings
• Ability to establish strong relationships with children/young people that combine warmth, humour and effective modelling and coaching of prosocial skills
• Ability to provide skill-building training and practice to support acquisition of new skills
• Ability to work cooperatively with the Program Supervisor to implement weekly treatment plans, accept supervision, attend meetings and complete required documentation
• Knowledge and skills in ensuring the health and protection of children and young people; understanding of Child Protection and Out-of-Home Care systems, standards and practices
• Understanding of cultural contexts and the unique needs of Aboriginal children and young people
• Understanding of the broad range of issues impacting the community services sector
• A strong interest or experience in the mental health field is preferred

Must be available on Thursday morning 10am to 12.30 approx.  and other afternoons as required (role will be up to 12 hours per week)

• Hourly rate of SCHADS Level 4 plus casual loading – $58.38 per hour plus super (as of 01/07/26)
• Help children and young people transition to long-term permanent care

Essential

·         Certificate IV in Youth Work or tertiary qualification in Community Services, Psychology or Social Work and/or relevant experience.
