Cheryl Anderson Wins the 2025 Jillian Wain Award

Some stories of care and commitment quietly unfold over years, leaving a legacy that touches countless lives. The story of Cheryl Anderson is a perfect example, a journey marked by resilience, compassion, and unwavering support for young people in need. This year, OzChild is proud to recognise Cheryl as the recipient of the 2025 Jillian Wain Award, celebrating her extraordinary impact within the Foster Care West program.

Cheryl’s journey as a foster carer began in 2006. Over nearly twenty years, she has opened her home and heart to adolescent girls, many facing complex and challenging circumstances. Her ability to provide stability and a safe space has helped these young people not only survive, but grow into confident adults, some now raising families of their own. The bonds Cheryl forms are lasting; she remains a source of support and guidance long after formal care ends, offering practical help, encouragement and a listening ear whenever it’s needed.

What truly sets Cheryl apart is her unshakable dedication – in all her years of fostering, she has never allowed a placement to break down! This is a true testament to her patience, resilience, and the trust she builds with those in her care. One young woman, reflecting on her time with Cheryl, shared: “I gave you hell, but now I realise that back then you only wanted to keep me safe.” It’s moments like these that reveal the depth of Cheryl’s impact.

Cheryl’s approach is holistic and inclusive. She is a strong advocate for maintaining connections with biological families, recognising the importance of these relationships in a young person’s life. Whether it’s facilitating phone calls, arranging transport, or building respectful partnerships with parents, Cheryl’s empathy and commitment shine through. Her loyalty and humility are evident in the quiet, steadfast way she supports those around her, always putting the needs of others first.

The Jillian Wain Award is a celebration of carers like Cheryl, who, through courage and compassion, change lives every day. Cheryl’s story is a reminder that the greatest impact often comes from the quietest acts of love and dedication.

Congratulations, Cheryl, and thank you for your extraordinary service to young people, families, and the entire OzChild community.
