Teresa: Reuniting an Aboriginal foster child with her extended family

Teresa was referred to OzChild soon after she was born and fortunately was able to find a home with foster carers Hayley and Thomas.

In their stable, loving home, Teresa blossomed into a bright, always-laughing toddler with a cheeky streak who enjoyed chasing the family cat.

It looked unlikely that Teresa could be safely reunited with her mother, but OzChild was able to find Teresa’s grandmother, Mary. When we found Mary, she became very emotional – she hadn’t even known Teresa existed until then.

Teresa’s case manager travelled four hours to Mary’s country home and learned that not only did she have a lovely cottage, she was a proud Aboriginal woman of the Yorta Yorta tribe.

Mary and her extended family were committed to raising Teresa in her Indigenous cultural heritage and since moving in with her Grandmother, Teresa has shown her usual cheerful bubbliness and curiosity.

Hayley and Thomas will miss Teresa, but they know that sometimes the best outcome a foster carer can provide is when they’re not needed anymore.
