Foster Care Week is celebrated in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia from 11-17 September. We are both humbled and amazed by the enormous contribution of our village of carers who open their homes, their hearts and their lives giving back to the community so selflessly. 

Recently we celebrated the commitment of some very special carers at a ceremony and morning tea event held in honour of retired OzChild carers.

Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO), a specialised foster care program has been ‘breaking the cycle’ for children in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland who, through no fault of their own, have ended up in residential care or alternative accommodation.

This Foster Care Week we join in the call for carers to be supported with the basics such as birth certificates and Medicare cards, to be unburdened by the financial pressure to pay for health and education expenses that aren’t covered by the care allowance.

In Victoria, the growth in OOHC is the fastest in the nation – a grim reality for the state which has endured the harshest and longest lockdowns. With more than 45,000 children already in OOHC across Australia, an additional 4,500 children are estimated to enter OOHC because of the pandemic – put simply, we do not have enough carers.

This year the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) is calling for fair treatment for all Australian children, by ensuring every family and community has what kids need to thrive and be healthy.

OzChild foster carer Helen Fox has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours with an Order of Australia for her commitment to supporting children as a foster carer.

OzChild applauds the announcement from the Andrew’s Labor Government of additional funding to provide much needed support during the COVID-19 crisis.
