The Honourable Alex Chernov, AO, QCGovernor of Victoria
The Governors of Victoria have been supporting OzChild in the capacity of Patron since it was formed through amalgamation of agencies in 1993. Each individual Governor must give approval to become a Patron of OzChild. The Honourable Alex Chernov supports OzChild because we are a well established charity he sees as worthy of public support. The Honourable Alex Chernov is Victoria's 28th Governor and was appointed to the role on 8 April 2011. Following his appointment, Mr Chernov spoke about his new role and said he would work particularly for the state's young. Mr Chernov has had a distinguished legal career, first as a leading commercial silk and then as a Supreme Court judge before being appointed to the Court of Appeal. In 2008, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. He is known for his energy, good humour and his prodigious ability for hard work. Government House Open Day Invitation 26 January 2012 The role of Governor of Victoria The Governor is appointed as the representative of the Queen as Head of State in Victoria and exercises the associated Vice-Regal functions and powers. The role of the Governor encompasses constitutional, ceremonial, and community functions including assenting to Bills produced by the Victorian Parliament, recognising the services of outstanding Victorians and encouraging Victorian community organisations. |
