Kai’s Story

Kai entered foster care in January 2020, aged 14. When he arrived, he had moderate depression, social anxiety and moderate OCD. He was shy and withdrawn and had been refusing to take his medication.

Kai’s foster carers knew there was a lovely young man busting to shine through so they worked hard to make him feel welcome, comfortable and safe. And it worked!

Kai is taking his medication daily, participating in school and his confidence has grown. He recently celebrated his 16th birthday and was showered with gifts, cards, cake and birthday well-wishes. He also got to enjoy a birthday pizza night, thanks to the OzChild Thriving Families Fund.

It’s obvious Kai is now feeling like part of the family, feeling safe, and beginning to thrive.

And it’s people like you that make it all possible.

The Mitchell Family’s Story

For most of their lives, Sarah’s* kids witnessed violence perpetrated by their father.

Fueled by alcohol, arguments between Sarah and David* would result in physical violence. Sarah’s eldest child Emma* (aged 13) would often step in to protect her mum by calling the police.

But after Sarah broke free from David, Emma’s behaviour started to mimic her father’s. She was aggressive and violent towards Sarah and her little brother Toby* (aged 11). And her mum became afraid to put limits on her behaviour for fear of her response.

The family were referred to the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) Program, where they learned to interact positively through negotiating, problem-solving and house rules. Emma was further supported with her own therapy.

Programs like FFT can create brighter futures for entire families. With your support we can continue to be here for families in their time of need.

Sam Young person in FFT-CW program

Before things at home were crazy. There was lots of yelling and I didn’t feel safe. Now we are all much happier, and mum even smiles now, our OzChild worker has made things so much better.
